Irish gaming software company wins US patent

Dublin-based Marketmaker Software has received notification of patent allowance from the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) for its platform, an odds exchange game that allows users to take a punt on the progress of sports team or athletes in the same way they would normally invest in a stock or a share.

The American Gaming Association has estimated that the unofficial US sports betting market (including handicap and spread betting) is worth up to US$360bn per annum.

Currently, sports betting is only legal within the state of Nevada.

“Although the newly patented site bridges the gap between financial markets and sports, the core exchange software is also interchangeable as a fully-fledged betting exchange and is totally unique in that it is completely deployed in the cloud,” said Marketmaker Software CEO Marc Butterly.

“ is a new approach to sports entertainment targeted at sports loving punters and anyone who plays the stock markets.

“If you’re used to placing stakes on the future performance of Apple or oil, it is a natural progression to do the same with your favourite football team.”

The notification of the patent means that Marketmaker Software can now proceed to the next step and select a larger gaming partner to commercially licence the cloud-based exchange platform for betting exchange purposes, he added.

The company will be seeking exclusive initial licensing agreements and revenues of up to US$2m per annum from gaming software companies looking to integrate a betting exchange into their offering.
