Apple Updates Rules for Real-Money Gambling Apps

Apple took a step forward in tightening regulation of gambling apps and blocking under-age access to those apps in its latest App Store Review guidelines update, published this week.

Guidelines Update

Under the new guidelines, apps that offer real-money gaming (e.g. sports betting, poker, casino games, horse racing) must have necessary licensing and permissions in the locations where the App is used, must be restricted to those locations, and must be free on the App store.

Apps may ask for date of birth (or other age-gating mechanisms) only for the purpose of complying with applicable children’s privacy statutes. Those apps that collect, transmit or have the capability to share personal information (such as name or address) from a minor must comply with applicable children’s privacy statutes.

Good Compliance

Apple should be applauded for introducing guidelines that restrict under-age access. Thanks to measures such as this, iOS users can continue be 100% certain that the online gambling apps they use are legally compliant and devoted to the principles of privacy, responsible and fair gaming and general adherence to legal standards.

As our readers have seen recently, there has been a steady stream of new legally compliant apps: All Slots Mobile Casino has launched a mobile casino games app at the UK App Store. Ladbrokes has launched new Blackjack and Roulette apps in conjunction with software developer Realistic Games.
